What is a Human Library?

What is a Human Library?

In a Human Library, books are people. The books are not experts, they represent the diversity of our campus and community. Readers can "check out" a book to hear their personal story, engage in a dialog about their experience, and work toward breaking down barriers and eliminating prejudice. The Human Library reminds us that everyone has a story to tell.

The first Human Library was held in Copenhagen, Denmark by a small group of young people called “Stop the Violence” in 2000 and has since become an international effort. In bringing the Human Library to WCC, we are actively building community by showcasing our diversity and encouraging dialog.

How can I get involved?

Advice for Human Library Readers

The Human Library is a collection of real people with real stories to tell.  Be open-minded and considerate while listening to and talking with your book.

Questions to consider while listening to your book:
  • How can I relate to this story?
  • How can this experience affect me, what can I learn about myself?
  • How can I walk out of here differently today?

Explore your own experiences:
  • When have you experienced bias or discrimination?
  • When have you discriminated against someone else?
  • When have you witnessed discrimination and you did nothing about it?
  • When have you witnessed discrimination and you did something about it?
  • What are the contributing factors to when we do something versus when we do nothing?
