Learning Tools - Humanities

Learning Tools for student study help in HUM courses. Instructors that are interested in improving this page should consider applying for the Faculty Fellowship.

Improve Your Study Skills

  • Recognize Variations: there can be many versions of the same story within the same culture.
    • Narrow your focus by declaring in your paper that you will focus on one.
    • Take notes on the differences between two versions of the same story.
      • Try a compare/contrast table!
  • Cultural Perspectives: Be careful about using a modern, western POV when analyzing these stories. These stories come from a variety of ancient contexts--it would be like comparing apples-to-oranges!
    • Pay attention to textbook readings & take notes on cultural values.
    • Realize that modern values exist (ex. feminism, capitalism, etc.) but look or feel different.
  • Make it Visual:
    • Draw your own illustrations, storyboard or look up artwork online that represent heroic figures. It will be motivating and exciting--and you just might learn something!
  • Make it Aural:
    • Poems & exciting (prose) narratives also capture these narratives--memorizing excerpts or creating your own poems will help with recall.
