Good Practices for Computer and Online Security

General

  • Use strong passwords. Use a unique password for every account. Consider using a password manager.
  • Make sure your software is up-to-date.
  • Know to whom or what you are giving your personal information. Consider if you feel comfortable giving your personal information before filling out a form, sending a text, replying to an email, or downloading an app.
  • Send personal information, such as financial and health data, over encrypted (https) connections only.
  • Protect your devices with passwords.

Email

  • Don't click on links from emails, which can download malware. Type URLs in your browser's address bar to go to a website instead.
  • Only open email attachments if you are expecting them or if they are from a known sender. Downloading attachments can download malware, too.

Evaluate Security Threats

Staying safe online is not easy. Consider the following questions to protect your data online:

  1. What data do you share or store online?
  2. What is at risk if your data are compromised?
  3. What steps can you take, and tools can you use, to keep your data safe?
