Sustainability Literacy Resources Committee. The following questions are intended to get students in a variety of disciplines started on researching sustainable Solutions related to what they are studying.

Winter 2019 Events

Poetry SustainsSustainability Poetry Open-Mic opportunity,  April 18, 2019, from 11:00 AM -12:15 PM in the Bailey Library.  Celebrate solutions to sustainability problems!

You can wow others by reading your own poem or one from the basket.  Or, you can participate as a member of the appreciative audience.  The event will be led by Maryam Barrie and is co-sponsored by the Sustainability Literacy Task Force and the Bailey Library.  If you have any questions, contact ethompso@wccnet.edu  Sustainable snacks will be provided.

Climate Action Program at WCC

WCC 2019 Climate Summit All are invited to the WCC 2019 Climate Summit on Thursday, March 28. The first session runs from 12:30 to 1:55pm and the second from 5:30 to 6:55pm; both in Towsley Auditorium. The event — free and open to the public — is sponsored by the WCC Sustainability Literacy Task Force and the WCC Sustainability Council. A list of speakers is available on our Facebook event page. Help spread the word about the event by sharing the event page with your social network.

2018-2019

Nature Walk, Tuesday, Sept 25, 2018, 3:30- 5:00 PM. Meet under the GM Bridge for a walk with nature expert Greg Vaclevec!  Rain date Wednesday, Sept 26, 2018.  This sustainability solution involves appreciating the natural environment.

 

Apple Orchard Project, Sept 28, 2018 10 AM- 1 PM ML150 for Instructors Only.  Meet in the prettiest room on campus and brainstorm ways to get sustainability into your class.  To participate, sign up on campus through Kalpa.  Lunch provided. This sustainability solution involves getting more sustainability education into the curriculum at WCC!

 

UM Harvest Fest and Tour of Straw Bale Construction, Sunday, October 7, 2018, 1-4 PM, Matthai Botanical Gardens on Dixboro Rd.  Join UM students for a look at the Campus Farm and Straw Bale Construction! This sustainability solution involves lowering heating and cooling needs in buildings by using insulating bales of straw and adobe as construction materials.

 

Book Club: Loosed Upon the World: The Saga Anthology of Climate Fiction, Thursday, October 25, 2018, 3:45-5:00 PM, Writing CenterJoin us for a discussion of selections from this great anthology!  This sustainability solution lets readers imagine problem and solution scenarios, which is how real solutions will arise!

 

Empty Bowls Event, Wednesday, November 14, 2018, lunchtime, SC 1st floor.  Join us for an event where you can purchase (or gaze at) beautiful, hand-made bowls and benefit those with food insecurity on campus.  This sustainability solution addresses environmental justice, to try to make food available to all.
