TLC Workshop: The Data Detective

This guide outlines the issues with data brokers, the information they collect and privacy issues.

Overview

What's the Issue?

  • Data is being collected on consumers electronically from the companies and platforms used every day (i.e. computer apps, credit cards, online accounts, loyalty cards).
  • The companies who collect the data own it and can (and do) sell it.
  • Data brokers buy the data and use it create profiles.
  • The profiles are sold to companies for targeted marketing.
  • Privacy and consent are both at issue with data collection and sale.
