Companies can be private, public, or subsidiaries of larger companies.
Public companies sell shares of the company (stocks) to the general public, and are required to submit financial information and annual reports to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Private companies do not sell publicly traded stocks and as a result, are not required to release as much information to the government or the general public They are therefore more challenging to research.
Subsidiaries of public companies can be difficult to research because the parent company is not required to report on each of them individually. Therefore, when researching a subsidiary, you often have to read carefully through reports about the parent and look for references to the subsidiary.
Company Websites provide a lot of information especially for public companies. All public companies are required to make an annual report on their website. It is the only information that is required to exist and be accurate and true. They also must provide a link to the Form 10-K.
10-Q and 10-K reports provide information quarterly and annually through financial reports for public companies.
Also available through the SEC are balance sheets (assets, liabilities, long-term debt), cash flow statements, company risk, and legal proceeding
