Web Searching and Web Evaluation

Use this guide for Google academic research.

Why use Google Books?

You may want to use Google Books to

  • search the full text of books digitized in Google books to read snippets of a book
  • verify a book citation
  • read a book's table of contents
  • read books that are out of copyright (in the public domain) or when publishers provide permission
  • read popular magazines for images or ads

"Book Search works just like web search. Try a search on Google Books or on Google.com. When we find a book with content that contains a match for your search terms, we'll link to it in your search results."

Create a Google Books Account

You can also create a Google Books account to "to create and manage personal bookshelves, share books with friends, and see what they are reading."

Google Partnership with Libraries

Google has asked libraries to submit their collection in Google books. You will not find the full text to a book from your library, but when you review your search resutls you will have three options:

  1. Book is out of copyright and you can read the book online
  2. Book is protected by copyright and you will be given an option to buy the book from an online site
  3. You will be directed to libraries where you can borrow the book (the WCC Bailey Library books will be listed)
