Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ChatGPT

ChatGPT

Although ChatGPT is only one of the AI tools that can generate text, it is the one most often referred to when discussing the use of AI tools in academic settings.

Concerns about Generative Chatbots

  • ChatGPT can be used to generate misinformation and advance false narratives (NewsGuard);
  • ChatGPT has leaked portions of its interactions to other users (BBC News);
  • Generative Chatbots perpetuate incorrect race-based health information (NPJ Digital Medicine);
  • Generative chatbots display political biases (Brookings Institution);
  • ChatGPT will generate inaccurate content, including legal briefs citing non-existent citations and case law (Reason);
  • Generative chatbots make factual errors (The Verge).

Benefits of Generative Chatbots

  • ChatGPT can be used to come up with relevant search terms, including synonyms. It can save time to ask a chatbot for a list of synonyms, theories, methods or other related concepts;
  • ChatGPT can provide a back-and-forth brainstorming experience, including being introduced to directions of thought not previously considered;
  • ChatGPT can be used as a study aid.
