Bee Campus USA fosters ongoing dialogue to raise awareness of the role pollinators play in our communities and what each of us can do to provide them with healthy habitat.

Fall 2023 Final Project: The Metamorphosis of Bees with ART 112 Basic Design I, with Instructor Jill Jepsen.

The student service learning project is on display at the Bailey Library. 

METAMORPHOSIS: change of physical form, structure, or substance, especially by supernatural means (source: Merriam Webster)

  • The format for this final project is an accordion book. 
  • Create a list of words that are associated with bees.
  • From our research on the study of bees, find  a theme that can change from one idea/image into another.

WCC Video 276

Winter 2023, students in Video 276 with faculty Ben Baker, designed a video graphic with bees landing on a flower in a grassy hillside.

Pollinator Garden 2023

The new WCC pollinator garden was planted by WCC students, staff, and volunteers in April 2023 during Earth Pollinator Garden Bee Campus USA sign Week.  The garden includes 1650 square feet of pollinator-friendly plantings including:  black chokeberry, red heart rose of Sharon, hydrangea, buttonbush, butterfly bush black knight, autumn fire stone crop, leaf grass, salvia, echinacea, and butterfly weed.

WTMC Hoop House Projects

Student Service-Learning Projects

Washtenaw Technical Middle College (WTMC) Hoop House Flower Garden- Students planted three outdoor  boxes with a variety of bee friendly plants that bloom at different times of the year.

WTMC Garden Wiki- Students are currently using Seek, an app that helps them identify plants and insects and will be using this information to create a garden wiki that will be linked to the WTMC homepage.

WTMC Apple Orchard Planting- Students planted 61 dwarfing apple root-stock this spring in addition to nine (9) heirloom plum trees.  Students will graft scion wood onto these root-stocks in the spring of 2020. Students plan to graft a wide variety of apples and will take scion wood from the remaining apple tree on campus to propagate new apple trees.

WCC Seed Library -- Students help with sorting seeds into small packets for borrowing by patrons.  Seed selection include a wide variety of flowers for bees and butterflies.
