Overview
What's the Issue?
- Data is being collected on consumers electronically from the companies and platforms used every day (i.e. computer apps, credit cards, online accounts, loyalty cards).
- The companies who collect the data own it and can (and do) sell it.
- Data brokers buy the data and use it create profiles.
- The profiles are sold to companies for targeted marketing.
- Privacy and consent are both at issue with data collection and sale.
